The Profit Gobblers
If you've followed Redmare.nz for a while, you'll already know the horses are affectionately known as the Profit Gobblers.
It's a term of endearment. Horse people understand.
The day job pays the sensible bills. Redmare pays for the horse habit. Feed, Farrier costs, Boots, Occassional adventures, Tack, More feed... if it has anything to do with horses, chances are the Profit Gobblers have already spent it.
They've got expensive taste
Tag … Looking back, she quietly started all this.
A little horse that never realised she was little. She'd outwalk and outwork horses twice her size, with a go-all-day attitude that had you begging she'd finally get tired. Just when you thought she'd settled... she'd pull a "what the...?" move.
Blame the half Morgan or blame the chestnut mare—I still thank her for the lessons in patience, humility, and the understanding that plans are usually just polite suggestions.
Tag didn't so much set the bar... She quietly raised it for every horse that followed.
I still catch myself measuring them against her.
Current Profit Gobbler No. 1 – Legacy (Lego)
Legacy, aka Lego, Chestnut mares have a habit of finding me.
A gift from my favourite Aunt, she's an Anglo-Arab with just enough Clydesdale in her breeding to convince me she'd eventually grow into a proper-sized horse.
She had other ideas. Turns out all the Clydesdale went into her opinion of herself.
She's clever, constantly opinionated, debatably willing, and forever reminding me that curiosity and bravery aren't always the same thing.
We're still a work in progress. Lego is determined to keep Redmare.nz running at a healthy loss.
Current Profit Gobbler No. 2 – Fern
Fern's earned herself a bit of a reputation around the Cavalcade crowd over the years.
Built like a tank, she carries herself as though she's in charge of everyone. Humans. Horses. Probably the weather too.
Her trademark sour face suggests she's permanently unimpressed with the standards around here. Until a feed bucket appears…..
Then, just for a moment, there's a rather sweet old mare hiding underneath all that boss mare attitude.
She retired herself. Nobody else got a vote.
Every saddle stand, every piece of canvas art, every market and every conversation helps keep the workshop humming...
Horse people have a pretty good habit of looking after horse people. We share stories, lend a hand, pass on hard-earned wisdom, and cheer on the little workshops chasing the next adventure.
If you've got a Profit Gobbler of your own, I'd love to hear about them.
And if you're curious where this month's Redmare "profit" disappeared to...
Keep an eye out for the Profit Gobbler Ledger. I'm pretty sure Lego's already spent it.People sometimes assume Redmare was carefully planned.
